Application and selection process

• All students registered at LMU with a valid LMU user ID and registration certificate can apply for a Deutschlandstipendium.
• The scholarship is intended for students of all nationalities, is independent of their income or that of their parents and does not count towards BAföG (The German Federal Training Assistance Act).
• Students who are already receiving a scholarship in recognition of their talents and achievements are not eligible to receive a Deutschlandstipendium. (Übersicht zur Zulässigkeit des gleichzeitigen Bezugs anderer Stipendien mit dem Deutschlandstipendium)
• Doctoral candidates are not eligible for funding.
• Students can reapply even after a rejection.
• Students who pursue their studies across different faculties, will be taken as belonging to the faculty where they exercise their voting rights in university elections. This information can be found in your official student documents. In the case of a change of faculty, responsibility is assumed by the Electoral Office, Ludwigstr. 27/II, room G 206.

• From first-year students: We require the average grade obtained for your university entrance qualification with a special focus on the grades that are most relevant for your chosen subject or the special qualification that entitles you to study in your degree program at LMU.
• From registered students: We require your academic performance to date, in particular your ECTS (credit transfer points), or the results of an intermediate examination. For students in a master's degree program, the final grade of your previous degree may also count.
  

Criteria:

• Special achievements, awards and prizes
• Internships and previous professional experience
• Extracurricular activities in voluntary work such as social, community, university representation or political involvement, or participation in religious communities, associations or clubs
• Special personal or family circumstances such as illness or disability, care of close relatives or of children — especially as a single parent — work in the family business, employment during studies, family background — for example, immigrant background or belonging to a non-academic household

Step 1: Submitting your application

• Deutschlandstipendien are awarded every summer semester between March and April. In justified exceptional cases, a scholarship can also be awarded for the winter semester.
• Students can apply via an online form (see example (PDF, 919 KB)), which is published, in advance, on this website every year.
• You may include files to support your application and present relevant additional facts that are not apparent from the online form.
• For some subjects (e.g. Medicine, Pharmacy) it is not always easy to obtain a record of your grades. In these cases, we encourage candidates to write a list of the courses attended / achievements, which can be uploaded as a self-assessment of academic record.
• The questions asked in the form that concern ECTS points and grades refer to all courses being taken. As an example, your average grade can be calculated as follows: Weight (multiply) each grade by the ECTS points awarded for that course, add these totals together and divide this by the total number of ECTS points awarded so far. Any ECTS points awarded without a grade should be left out of this calculation.

• After the application deadline, all applications will be assessed by the relevant faculty.
• In order to arrive at a fair decision, a selection committee is formed at each faculty, which usually consists of: the Vice Dean (students), other faculty members, a representative for research staff and a student representative.
• The selection committee makes a shortlist, selected from all applications received. Applications are evaluated based on the criteria of the Stipendienprogramm Gesetz (Scholarship Program Act) and the subject regulations or other selection criteria defined by the funding bodies.
• If desired, the funding bodies can exercise an advisory function and, in this case, review applications in an anonymized form.
• The faculty prepares a ranking list of applicants and forwards it to the Executive Board.
• The Executive Board then determines which applicants will receive funding. This decision generally follows the recommendations made by the faculties.

Step 3: Feedback

• Once the Executive Board has made its decision, all applicants receive a response, by email, to their campus address. Applicants can expect a response six weeks after the application deadline (for the summer semester in mid-May; for the winter semester in mid-November).
• Only students who have been awarded a scholarship will have their application details officially verified. For this purpose, additional documents may also be requested.

All students enrolled at LMU can apply for a scholarship exclusively online from 04 March to 8 April 2024, 4 pm.

The scholarship is open to students of all nationalities, regardless of their other income or that of their parents, and does not count towards BAföG.

Applicants can submit their application documents electronically via the LMU portal for the Deutschlandstipendium until 8 April 2024, 4 pm (cut-off date).

Please Note: On the last page of the application (page 11), it is absolutely necessary to click on the blue button at the bottom right with the inscription "Submit application" (or „Bewerbung abgeben“ if you are not using the translation). Only then have you submitted your final application and only then will you receive a confirmation email. In general, if you do not receive a confirmation email, your application did not work.

After you have submitted your final application, you can still make changes and updates by simply logging into the portal again. These changes will then be saved automatically. You will not receive another confirmation email for that.

• Funding for each individual scholarship is 300 euros per month. Half of the total provided comes from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, and the other half from private sponsors and companies, foundations, associations, alumni or private individuals.
• The scholarship is usually awarded for a period of one year. The maximum duration for funding depends on the standard period of study for the degree program in question.
• For the summer semester, funding is paid in June, retroactively as of April 1, and for the winter semester in December retroactively as of October 1.
• Provided that sufficient funds are available and the scholarship holders continue to meet all eligibility criteria, the scholarship can be extended. To ensure this, recipients must submit a record of their academic activities once a year.
• Funding ends under the following circumstances: if the maximum funding period is reached by the end of the standard length of study, if the annual aptitude- and course certificates are submitted late or not at all, if the student is leaving LMU (e.g. to change university), if the student changes subject area within LMU, if the last exam has been taken, if there are insufficient funds available and it is not possible to continue the Deutschlandstipendium.
• Funding beyond the maximum funding period can only be offered if the duration of the study program is extended with valid justification. Grounds for such include: disability, pregnancy, caring for a child, or a subject-based study period abroad. Candidates who wish to extend their scholarship must apply to do so at the Unit III.4 Scholarships.

In addition to the monthly funding of 300 euros, some scholarship sponsors offer a supplementary program to their scholarship students. These might include corporate tours or networking opportunities. Students are not obliged to participate in these additional activities, although they can be very valuable — in particular — in establishing new contacts with potential employers.

In addition, LMU invites all scholarship students to the Deutschlandstipendium award ceremony. All scholarship students receive an invitation to the ceremony.

According to the Stipendienprogramm-Gesetz (Scholarship Program Act), scholarship sponsors are permitted to participate in the selection process in an advisory capacity. If applicants give their express authorization, sponsors can — upon request — also gain access to the anonymized application documents of candidates that have been shortlisted. However, this does not enable sponsors to identify the individual behind the application, and is intended only to allow them to provide comments on the candidate's qualifications. If students are selected to receive funding under the Deutschlandstipendium, they can choose whether their contact details are passed on to their sponsor.
